By car, it’s roughly a 2-hour drive west of the Calgary (YYC) Airport to reach Lake Louise. You will pass the mountain town of Canmore on route, as well as Banff. You also pass the turnoff to Mt Norquay Ski Resort and Sunshine Village Ski Resort. If you’re lucky, you might see wildlife on the drive to Lake Louise.

Go skiing or boarding at Lake Louise Ski Resort

The spectacular Lake Louise Ski Resort is one of the largest in North America. It’s also one of three major ski resorts in Banff National Park. The resort covers 4200 skiable acres across four mountain faces. It enjoys a long ski season – usually running from early November until early May.

Ski runs are variable and include everything from gentle slopes that are perfect for beginners, cruising runs and chutes, glades, gullies and remote bowls for the more advanced skier or boarder. It offers some of the most challenging skiing terrain in the Rockies!

Sign up for one of the lessons – and take your skiing and boarding to the next level. It’s also a great way to get the lay of the land at the resort. Find the hidden powder stashes and the quieter runs with your instructor. Courses accommodate all levels from never- been-skiing-before to beginner, intermediate and expert level.

Be sure to check for incentive cards, season passes and other deals and packages – no matter if you’re a lone skier or with a large group.

What to do in the Lake Louise area in winter other than ski

The Lake Louise area is a winter paradise. If you’re not into downhill skiing or snowboarding, you’ll still find plenty to do.

Check out this blog post for a good run down of things to do in the summer and fall. But come winter, you might want to check out some of these activities.

Go skating on Lake Louise, called the world’s most beautiful skating rink. It offers a couple of options. Enjoy a romantic skate with your partner on one rink or a game of pick-up hockey on another. Both have glacier studded mountains as a backdrop.

Playing shinny on Lake Louise

Go dogsledding on the Great Divide Trail with Kingmik Dogsled Tours. This can be a fun family-friendly outing or a romantic one if you snuggle up with your significant other. Most tours tackle a 16 km trail over a 90-minute outing.

Enjoy cross-country skiing on a network of trails both close to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and on the beautiful Pipestone Trails, just a short drive away. You can also cross-country ski on the Moraine Lake Road to a lookout.

Cross-country skiing on the Fairview Trail

Catch the Ice Magic Festival at Lake Louise – where you can see professional ice carvers in action. Be warned. In normal non-Covid years, it’s very busy so go early or late in the day.

One of the many stunning ice sculptures you can see at Lake Louise in winter

Do the nearby Johnston Canyon Ice Walk. Slip slide your way up the cantilevered catwalk, ogling the gorgeous canyon scenery and icy waterfalls. For safety’s sake, take a pair of icers or microspikes with you. This is a fun, family-friendly outing.

Go through a short tunnel to see the first set of frozen waterfalls

Go snowshoeing starting from Lake Louise. Do the easy lakeshore trail if there has just been a big dump of snow or snowshoe 2.6 km one way to Mirror Lake. If you continue towards the Lake Agnes Tea House (closed in winter), you enter challenging Class 2 avalanche terrain so unless you have the know how and the right gear turn back at Mirror Lake and retrace your steps.

Eat well in Lake Louise. Some excellent choices include the lounge with amazing views at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise the dining room at the Relais & Chateau property called the Post Hotel & Spa or the dining room at Deer Lodge.

While the scenery is truly magnificent in the region, the weather can be particularly harsh in winter months. Therefore, the potential for driving hazards is greatly increased. For this reason, it is recommended that visitors traveling to Lake Louise from Calgary Airport rely on professional transportation. Rather than renting a car to drive yourself, put your safety in the hands of pros.

Professional chauffeurs are familiar with area thoroughfares and specially trained to safely navigate dangerous conditions. These include black ice, blizzards, and blocked roadways. Hand the driving duties over to a seasoned professional who already ‘knows the ropes.’ This will ensure the utmost security for you and your traveling companions,
