What to do in Calgary? This question is often the first step toward searching for an idea for something to do in Canada’s sunniest city.

There are many things to do in this western wonderland, but how to do it, where to do it and when to do it is up to you!

Calgary Tower

Visit the Calgary Tower’s observation deck to get a sweeping 360-degree view of the city of Calgary and the Canadian Rocky Mountains. View the iconic Saddledome, Stephen Avenue Walk, and Canada Olympic Plaza from 600+ feet from the ground! Brave the walk on the glass floor balcony or book dinner reservations at SKY 360 to enjoy a high-end, sky-high dining experience.

Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is the largest zoo in western Canada. It is home to almost 1,000 creatures spread across over 100 species. The Calgary Zoo also boasts life-sized dinosaur models throughout the Prehistoric Park that will have you feeling like you’ve travelled back in time! If you are looking for family-friendly fun, this is the place to be!

Glenbow Museum

The Glenbow Museum is an art and history museum located downtown in the city of Calgary. Their mission is: to activate art, objects, and ideas so everyone who experiences Glenbow leaves with something to share.

Their library contains 100,000 books, periodicals, newspapers, maps, and pamphlets with relevance to Western Canada. This museum is home to items that represent Indigenous cultures and traditions from across Canada. Informative and fun, Glenbow Museum is great for increasing knowledge and appreciation of history for all ages.

Heritage Park

Heritage Park is Canada’s largest living history museum. It offers historical facts mixed with adventure, discovery, and fun while learning what makes Western Canadian settlement so unique. This Historical Village will take you back in time over 100 years with six period-appropriate shops and staff dressed in outfits from the 1800s throughout the park.

Rafting Down the Bow River

Rafting down the fast-moving Bow River in Calgary is an awesome way to enjoy a hot day. If you own your own raft and life jacket, this adventure is 100% free! If not, don’t worry, there are many rental companies to choose from that can provide all that you need. Check the City of Calgary website for any updates on current bans or advisories.

Free Things to do in Calgary

No money? No problem! There are plenty of things that are free to do in Calgary!

Check out the Peace Bridge that connects the southern Bow River pathway and downtown Calgary with the northern Bow River pathway and the community of Sunnyside. The Peace Bridge offers both pedestrian and bike pathways. If you visit this stunning piece of architecture at night, you will see it lights up beautifully against the night sky above and the river below.

Rain or snow limiting your options for free things to do? Head over to Devonian Gardens. It is a completely indoor botanical garden with over 500 trees, 50 varieties of plants, fountains, fish ponds, a playground for kids and so much more. Located in the Core Shopping Centre downtown Calgary, Devonian Gardens is easy to find with close access to food and shopping of all kinds!

Prince’s Island Park is another great spot to see in Calgary in any season. In the winter there is skating and cross country skiing. In the summer there are playgrounds, splash parks, and flower gardens. Whether you walk, bike ride, or want to sit and enjoy the sites, Prince’s Island Park is a beautiful place to visit.

The new Central Library is an amazing piece of public art inside and out. From the outdoor archway that resembles a chinook arch, to the bookscalator inside, this 240,000 square foot building has five levels, giving you lots of room to explore.

One of Calgary’s best and busiest tourist attractions is Crescent Heights Hill. From here you get great views of the city of Calgary’s downtown skyline and the Bow River.
