A practical guide to vehicle age design capacity comfort luggage and value. What customers are really comparing.

When customers request a limousine quote, they often compare one hourly price with another. The vehicle may simply be described as a 10 passenger stretch or a 20 passenger stretch, so two very different limousines can look equivalent on paper. They are not always equivalent in age, design, condition, mechanical reliability, passenger access, luggage space or interior equipment.

AM PM Limo has operated in Alberta since 2008. We have owned and operated older Lincoln MKT, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Hummer stretch limousines, and we have dealt directly with the maintenance issues that appear as stretched vehicles age. After moving most of our stretch fleet to newer Cadillac, Chrysler and GMC models, we experienced fewer age-related breakdown problems. That history is why we believe customers should compare the actual vehicle, not only the passenger count and price.

A newer limousine can still require maintenance, and an older limousine can be kept in good condition. Age is only one factor. Mileage, conversion quality, maintenance history and current condition also matter. However, a renewed interior does not renew the engine, transmission, alternator, battery, driveline, air-conditioning hardware or modified body structure beneath it. For a wedding, graduation or long trip to Banff, Lake Louise or Jasper, those differences can become more important than a small difference in the quote.

AM PM stretch limousine comparison

Maximum capacity means every available passenger position is occupied. Comfortable capacity is a practical planning range and varies with passenger size, formalwear, winter clothing and personal-space preferences. The stretch measurement below is the added extension, not the vehicle's total length.

All passenger seats in these limousines have seat belts. The newer stretch models also use separate rear heating and electric air-conditioning systems controlled by the chauffeur from the front. This design avoids adding another belt-driven compressor and pulley to the engine accessory system. Passengers can ask the chauffeur to adjust the rear temperature without having to learn or handle rear control panels.

Cadillac's CT5 compared with Lincoln's Town Car and MKT limousines

The Cadillac CT5 limousine brings back the low, formal sedan shape that many customers picture when they hear the word "limousine". Cadillac also has immediate luxury recognition. In our booking experience, customers usually understand what a Cadillac is without needing an explanation, while many customers asked to see a photo when offered a Lincoln MKT.

The closest older comparison is the Lincoln Town Car stretch. Lincoln confirms that Town Car production ran through 2011. That means even the newest underlying Town Car is now at least 15 model years old. The Town Car remains an important limousine design, but customers should understand the age of the vehicle they are comparing with a new CT5 stretch.

The stretched Lincoln MKT followed its predecessor, the Town Car in the livery market. It used a crossover-style body rather than the traditional long sedan profile. After replacing our Town Car fleet with four 2013 model-year Lincoln MKTs, we found that they never achieved the same customer recognition as the Town Car. Even worse, as they aged, we encountered drivetrain and rear-cabin air-conditioning problems that made them less dependable than we could tolerate for our customers who had booked them for important events.

The majority of Lincoln MKTs were produced directly following Lincoln's decision to stop Town Car production in 2011. Documented coachbuilt MKT stretches continued through 2019, although later examples were far less common in our regional experience. Therefore, when customers see a "new" MKT limousine advertised, they should realize it is at least 7 years old, and likely even older.

The AM PM Cadillac CT5 seats up to 10 passengers, with 6 to 8 as a comfortable planning range. It has a 120 inch extension, Bluetooth audio and an extra fifth passenger-entry door. The fifth door lets passengers enter closer to the rear seating instead of bending and moving through the full length of a low-roof cabin.

Chrysler 300 compared with older Lincoln stretches

The Chrysler 300 is another modern way to retain the familiar sedan-stretch appearance. It seats up to 10 passengers, with 6 to 8 recommended for a more comfortable ride. Like the CT5, it has a 120 inch extension and a fifth passenger-entry door. Passengers can connect a phone through Bluetooth.

Calgary has the white Chrysler limousine. Edmonton has the pink Chrysler limousine, a distinctive option for birthdays, graduations, concerts and celebrations. The interior design is the same in both vehicles; the exterior colour is the difference.

The Chrysler has a rear-seat opening that can help with skis or other long items, but using that space reduces passenger seating. That tradeoff should be discussed when requesting a quote. A 10 passenger rating describes people, not ten people plus ten suitcases.

Cadillac XT6 limousine compared with older Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator stretches

The Cadillac XT6 moves the 14 passenger category into a current Cadillac design while preserving the headroom customers expect from an SUV. It has a 140 inch extension, an extra fifth passenger-entry door and a maximum capacity of 14. For comfort, approximately 8 to 11 passengers is a useful planning range.

Older comparisons in this category include Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion and Lincoln Navigator stretches. Ford still produces the regular Expedition, but the termination of their Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) program for livery versions of the Expedition, Ford Excursion and Lincoln Navigator stretches ended years ago. The age question concerns the specific base vehicle used for the stretch. Our own retired Ford Expedition limousines were based on 2008 vehicles, and we no longer dispatch them after upgrading the fleet.

Ford's Excursion is a different model. Ford's model history ends with the 2005 Excursion, so any Excursion-based limousine begins with a much older underlying vehicle. Customers may still see both Excursion and Expedition stretches advertised, but the names should not be treated as interchangeable.

Alberta winters can make age visible around modified body panels and running boards. In our former SUV limousines, we saw cracking around body-filler repairs and rust on running boards. Repainting can improve appearance, but it does not change the age of the underlying vehicle or mechanical components.

The XT6 rear seats can be folded to create more luggage room. In that configuration, the limousine can accommodate roughly eight passengers with luggage for approximately eight, depending on bag size. Folding the seats reduces passenger capacity, so the group and luggage count should be confirmed together.

GMC Sierra 3500 and Dodge Ram truck limousines

Truck limousines solve a problem that many stretched sedans and SUVs cannot: they retain an exterior truck bed for luggage, golf bags and equipment. AM PM operates 16 passenger GMC Sierra 3500 and Dodge Ram stretch limousines in both Calgary and Edmonton.

The GMC Sierra 3500 has a 165 inch extension, seating for up to 16 and an extra fifth passenger-entry door. White and black GMC truck limousines are available in both cities. The standard bed is approximately 82 inches long, providing substantial separated storage. Depending on the size and loading arrangement, the bed can carry luggage or golf equipment for a large group without placing items in the passenger cabin.

Dodge Ram stretch limousine

The Dodge Ram is also a 16 passenger, 165 inch stretch and is available in Calgary and Edmonton. Its retained bed is approximately 76 inches long. Unlike the newer fifth-door models, the Dodge does not have the extra passenger-entry door, but it remains a distinctive truck limousine with valuable exterior storage.

Based on publicly advertised Calgary and Edmonton fleets reviewed for this article, these truck-stretch models appear to be exclusive to AM PM locally. Public listings can change, so customers comparing quotes should still ask each provider for a current, model-specific photo.

Cadillac Escalade limousine compared with stretched Hummer H2

The Cadillac Escalade is AM PM's largest new-model stretch limousine. It seats up to 20 passengers, with approximately 12 to 16 recommended for greater comfort. It has a 165 inch extension, an extra fifth passenger-entry door and a black exterior. It is available in both Calgary and Edmonton.

The typical older comparison is the 20 passenger Hummer H2 stretch. H2 production ended after the 2009 model year. In 2026, that makes the underlying H2 vehicles at least 17 model years old. Their bold shape remains recognizable, but their age can affect mechanical reliability, body condition and the availability of current vehicle technology.

AM PM operated Hummer stretches in the past. Our newer Escalade gives customers the same large-group category in a current Cadillac design, with Bluetooth audio, a fifth door and current interior finishes. The rear seats can be folded for luggage. A practical planning example is approximately 12 passengers with luggage for about 10, depending on bag size.

Why the fifth passenger door matters

Most traditional stretch limousines use the vehicle's original passenger doors. Once the body is lengthened, passengers entering through a rear door may still need to bend, turn and move through the cabin to reach the far seats. That is harder in a low sedan, and it can also be awkward in a long SUV when passengers are wearing formal clothing.

The CT5, Chrysler 300, XT6, GMC Sierra and Escalade each add a fifth passenger-entry door in the stretched section. It creates a second access point closer to the rear seating. In our experience, extra doors were uncommon on older local limousine fleets and were usually treated as a premium feature. The Dodge Ram does not have this extra door.

Capacity comfort and luggage are different questions

Limousine seating is similar to airline seating in one important way: the legal maximum tells you how many designated seats are available, not how spacious the vehicle will feel when every position is occupied. A group using half to three quarters of the rated capacity will usually have more personal space.

Luggage must be planned separately. AM PM does not allow bags in the passenger cabin or on passengers' laps, and we do not use the front passenger seat as an overflow luggage area. These rules keep the cabin and exits clear.

These luggage examples are planning guides, not guarantees. Oversized cases, hockey equipment, skis, golf travel covers and unusually large bags can change the result. Share the number and approximate size of every item when requesting a quote.

Why a larger limousine is not twice the price

Customers sometimes expect a 20 passenger limousine to cost twice as much as a 10 passenger limousine. The operating cost does not rise in direct proportion to the number of seats. The chauffeur, dispatch, preparation, cleaning, insurance and reserved service time are required for either vehicle.

For example, AM PM's current all-inclusive city rate is $263 per hour for a 10 passenger limousine and $327 per hour for the 20 passenger Cadillac Escalade. The difference is $64 per hour. If the group shares the cost at full capacity, that equals $26.30 per person per hour in the 10 passenger limousine and $16.35 per person per hour in the 20 passenger Escalade.

These are comparison examples, not universal quotes. Consecutive-hour bookings may have a lower hourly rate. Airport service, travel outside the city, additional geography and high-demand dates can add charges or change pricing. Calgary and Edmonton city rates are generally similar. A final quote requires the passenger count, service date and time, number of consecutive hours, pickup location, stops and destination.

Reliability matters most when the trip cannot wait

A limousine is often booked for once-in-a-lifetime, milestone events such as weddings, anniversaries or significant birthdays. A wedding ceremony, airport departure or out-of-town itinerary cannot simply be rescheduled because a battery, alternator, transmission, driveline component or air-conditioning system fails. Those failures may occur even when the upholstery still looks acceptable.

Our most important operational result from updating the fleet has been a reduction in the breakdown issues we experienced with older Lincoln MKT, Ford Expedition and Hummer limousines. Newer vehicles are not failure-proof, but they remove many years of accumulated mechanical wear and reduce the number of age-related components we must manage.

AM PM maintains an internal maintenance program. Chauffeurs document pre-trip inspections before operation. Applicable passenger vehicles also complete Alberta Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program inspections every six months. Calgary vehicles complete the City's annual Enhanced Livery Vehicle Inspection Standards inspection as well. If a problem is identified before service, AM PM normally has an equal-capacity or larger backup vehicle available in Calgary and Edmonton.

Questions to ask before booking a stretch limousine

➜ Can you send current exterior and interior photos of the vehicle category being quoted?

➜ What is the legal maximum capacity, and what group size do you recommend for comfort?

➜ Does the limousine have an extra passenger-entry door?

➜ How much luggage space remains at our passenger count?

➜ Can passengers connect to the sound system by Bluetooth?

➜ How is the rear cabin heated and cooled?

➜ What inspections and internal maintenance procedures apply to the vehicle?

➜ What charges apply for airport service or travel outside Calgary or Edmonton?

A clear quote should answer those questions without treating every stretch limousine as the same product. The model, age, accessibility, comfort, luggage capacity and maintenance history all affect the experience.

Choose the vehicle before comparing the price

Start with the number of passengers, the amount of luggage, the route and the accessibility your group needs. Then, compare quotations for genuinely comparable vehicles. A small price difference can represent a large difference in the age and design of the limousine.
